Daze - Lips EP on Lobster Theremin

What I like about Lobster Theremin’s general aesthetic is the apparent lack of calculation that comes with each release. Of course, some compositions appearing under the guise of white labels may be open to criticism inasmuch as they predictably nurture an unpolished approach in line with the label’s sound narrative, but up to now this has seemed nothing more than spontaneous and natural.

Acid is everywhere at the moment and ‘Untitled’ has it in abundance, operating just under the radar but rising to the fore alongside an electro backdrop and an ethereal synth. ‘Lips’ is upfront in its ’94 Original DAT Dub’ guise, and toned down for the more contemplative ’07 Skyline Mix’. There’s not that much difference once they’ve had time to roll around in your head a few times, any distinction coming down to how aggressive the breaks and the vocals are, the smoothing out of the percussion making the ’07 . . . Mix’ preferable, to me at least. Finally, ‘Drag Ball’, has a layered primitivism about it, and courses through its length on a dawn-of-time analogue vibe which is as evocative as it is assured.

Daze has more than shown his understanding of the various sonic strands that united twenty five or so years ago in many a muddy field and warehouse around the M25 and, in doing so has revisited the format in a way that feels neither hackneyed nor derivative.
