The Brooklyn-based Wolf & Lamb Records has achieved great success since it's launch a few years back and with damn good reason too. Their output is always different from one release to the next and is an imprint that loves to delve into and right through the electronic music spectrum. Alongside their variation of genres, so has been a wonderful range of artists and remixers put forward via their catalogue, creating a label that always excites. Finding out they have a new release forthcoming is a delight and that time has approached again.
Their 36th release has been culminated by Greg Paulus (No Regular Play, Just One Night, Kiki Bridges), John Camp & Brian Derdiarian and is a very summery affair to say the very least, with elements of hip hop and beach bar at it's very core. A 4-track release has 3 originals at it's core, plus one superb remix from Tanner Ross – a man who possibly has the best biography I have ever had the pleasure of reading, all written in a tongue & cheek manner.
'Fire In The Sky' is how the EP is introduced – a formation of sounds that are culminated from delightful guitars, hypnotising vocals and seducing horns. Although it has summer written all over this, you would be equally as happy listening to it while you sat at home on a rainy day. A wonderful way to start any release and one that has certainly got my attention.
'Surf Song' is next in line and kicks off with pads that elevate you into another world entirely. Tussled with Balearic guitars, the track is simple in it's arrangements, yet overpowering with feel and emotion. As with the previous, the track is elevated with a stunning horn arrangement and gradual drums and baselines, completely taking you on a journey along it's never ending possibilities.
The last original track on the release is 'Remo', a track of similar tempo yet more drum orientated in it's base, with delayed vocals and drip-type sounds throughout, before engaging fully into the vocal arrangements. This is such a stunning piece of music and one that will always be close by in my collection. Mr Ross delivers the ubiquitous remix in the release, giving his interpretation of 'Remo'. There are two ways in which you can tackle a remix: completely change the feel and sound of the track or, as this one has been done, remixing in such a way that the track is different per say, while keeping to a similar feel and sound to the original. Both have their advantages and as such, the quality of the end result is always down to the skill of the artist. Ross has given a superb interpretation of the original, while taking none of the feeling away from it, thus staying true to the original.
I love this release. It is a superb sound for the summer and one that I presume will, and should for that matter, be adored by many. Amongst the many sounds scheduled for release this summer, this will definitely be one of the highlights. Wherever you are listening to this, turn it up and get completely sucked in. Definitely one of my favourites.
