Blank Slate, the record label set up by Soren Jahan, aka Rene Audiard, is fast gathering pace and putting Boston on the thinking man’s techno map, along with Supply, which he runs with John Barera. This is definitely a good thing, as it would be nice for the city which inspired ‘Cheers’ to be known for another side to electronic music other than Soul Clap.
This is the second various artists release on the label and it’s immediately evident that the tracks here share common ground. An understated sonic fug envelopes proceedings from start to finish with the quartet distinguishing itself respectively by to which respiratory, metronomic or harmonic level the rhythm evolves.
It’s a game of two halves really; ‘Remorse’ and ‘Derivate’ take the plaudits for being the funkiest pair on this release, with obvious nods to Perlon, Trelik and STL.
While ‘Inthecity’ and ‘Black Pressure’ both have a techier edge: the former sounding like a slowed-down grind through mud which evolves to, in some ways, mimic the airier, defter cosmic journey of the latter.
There is a dubby feel to all of the compositions here, which is probably a good reason why the subtleties of these tunes are liable to be lost on the casual listener.
Made for expansive sound systems and the ambience they purvey, one take will not be enough, but patience will be rewarded if persistent.
