It's been a while since I've heard anything from Art House (the side label of Jamie Anderson's Artform Records). It's not from them not putting anything out, far from it However my inbox has been clobbered up recently with an absolute drivel of sounds, drowning out all the great stuff that has been released. So when I pressed play on their latest offering from Owain K, I was delighted and relieved.
Bristol born & Cardiff bred Owain K aka Owain Kimber has been making quite a great name for himself in the past. Releasing on the likes of Poker Flat, Tsuba (one of my absolute favourite labels I might add) and the infant yet equally as great Teng label, it's apparent his style is noticed. His releases have also been praised from, to name only a few, Gosh, Pierre and The Revenge.
The release is three tracks strong, kicking off with 'New Horizon' - a pad-built bit of gold that performs subtlety at it's very best. The drums are simple with it's percussion hinting throughout, leaving the pads to mould you into this element of sheer bliss. Add on top of that this stunning synth bass and you are left with a track that describes everything great about house music – past & present.
'Night Echoes' is next in line and is a slightly deeper affair. A weightier kick that is accompanied by this brilliant swing of hats, delivering this stomp you would certainly be happy with on the floor. Then the synth-bass is introduced alongside some slightly panned electronic claps and cowbells, all to be topped off with this stunning electronic atmosphere, thus completing this medley of beautiful sounds. The EP ends with 'Spheres' – a straight house formation of drums and synth hits that create this exhilarating drive, consummated on the top of pad stabs every few bars. The groove is complimented with this arped-bassline that holds you deep within its tenor.
This whole release is prodigious. It really is. Simple is its format, while effortlessly carrying you along in its very intelligent manner. It deserves a hell of a lot of attention as it ticks every one of my house loving boxes. Go buy people and support the artist, and the label for showcasing such fine talent.
