It takes something to be a little different. To stand out. I mean, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it, right? Let's face it, most people are happy to do exactly what the next man is. Throwing up the same formula as everyone else, as if the idea of doing something different is frowned upon, punishable even. For screwing off the common directive of insipidness and mundane, you will censured and chastened for committing such atrocities. How dare they even think such a foolish thought? Shame on them!
So, when you hear something that isn't just a looped copy-repeat slice of everything else around, you are set back a little. Stunned almost. That's not to say wonderful and unique music is on the decline? Far from it. In fact as technology progresses, so do ideas. That, is something I am delighted with and am certainly not tarnishing. However with that same technological spurge, also increases people's ability to churn out tripe, day in, day out, weakening the ability for the 'good stuff' to shine and become more common practice. I mean, what ever happened to rhythm? Chords? Tracks that swell? Some people just fail to realise this point exactly. Copy, sleep, mundane, repeat!
So when you come across something that is none of the aforementioned disgust, you are taken back in awe of its beauty – it's beautiful to be different. Those are exactly my thoughts when I received and opened the new Navid Izadi release 'Once Upon A Time'.
Forthcoming on the Brooklyn-based Touch Of Class Records, the release is somewhat eerie and magical. Chords are rife and melody is allowed to shine. As if? Inauspicious pads alongside prophetic and suggestive vocals, glide through the whole release, taking you on a ominous journey of excitement.
The 3 remixes also lend themselves very well to the original and are an excellent companion to the it's rudimentary form. Although each track is set apart from each other, none really fall out of the boundary for what was already set by the original - merely a true extension of already great tracks. They complete and set a notion of how releases of this ilk should be - put together, with thought. Hats off to the label and praise certainly to Tone Of Arc, Kenneth Scott and Signal Flow for stepping up. A must for anyone's collection I'm sure.
