After the success of the ‘Off The Grid’ EP, Nuno dos Santos’ Something Happening Somewhere label returns with the second instalment of their narrative driven releases. This time round, Mayaku have cracked out their hardware to construct a thirteen minute musical interpretation of the Rendlesham Forest Incident, a UFO sighting that is often described as Britain’s very own Roswell.
Starting with a frenetic drum pattern, ‘Bushwalking’ is laden with a sense of urgency from the off. The synths slowly work their way into the beat, creeping through the track like an evasive shadow, all the more powerful for their fleeting starts. The arrival of the bass line ties everything together into a tight groove, whilst the guitar licks merely add to the funk that is oozing out of the machines as the various sounds swirl around you in glorious union. The track maintains intrigue throughout and, whilst the breakdowns may give you some respite, they never let slide the high levels of energy maintained throughout.
The Johannes Brecht remix lifts the bass line to the fore of the track from the off, allowing the percussive elements to fall through the beat like shafts of light drifting through a thick canopy. Whilst the urgency of the original is no longer there, the raw emotion is still brought through, particularly when the guitar riff is deployed. After an enchanting breakdown, the track bursts back to life, with an extra layer of wobble drifting underneath for good measure. This remix wraps itself up in increasing layers of complexity, before stripping them all away to leave behind a delightfully mellow groove.
The Dilated Pupils’ ‘Burning Bush’ Remix gets off to a steady percussive start, sounding as though an unknown mechanism is finally kicking into gear. A wonderfully beefed up bass soon barges onto the scene, instantly arresting your attention. It’s not long before the ominous growl of synth launches deep into the mix, advancing ever further forward, before slowly slinking back into the darkness. A truly dark, brooding, intoxicating brew.
