If you've been following the various pursuits of Solomun 's Diynamic over the past few years, then you'll doubtlessly have encountered the splendid works of Kolombo at some stage. If you're yet to get down with the Belgian's uptempo and melodic sound, then you almost definitely will soon, as he continues to scale the electronic music echelons at an impressive pace.
What's more, Kolombo is an impressively busy DJ/producer too, and it's far from just Diynamic where he's honed his sound. Indeed, his latest track found favour on German label Hedonism ; itself an increasingly influential destination for all things house and disco. With all this in mind, we decided to dial up the man in question to get his side of the story. Here's what went down...
You're from Belgium. Was it a good place to learn electronic music?
Definitely, it was one of the first places to properly embrace electronic music at the end of the '80s and the beginning of the '90s. I really miss that time actually.
Were you really into the likes of R&S when you were growing up?
Well I've been doing music since the end of the '90s, but the label has grown a lot again over the past few years. So I would say I'm still a fan of theirs, absolutely.
Do you think it's better or worse than it used to be in Belgium for house music these days? Or just different?
To be honest, these days I don't really know what's happens in Belgium. For more than 1 year I didn't play in my own country, but as it's smack-bang in the middle of Europe, it makes it pretty easy to travel to other places – that's the upside of it all!
So do you not get to play at home often then? Are those gigs very special for you?
Yeah, I do get to play occasionally at my friend's party, music Please, but unfortunately it's been a while since they booked me...
Diynamic has really pushed your career in a new direction, hasn't it?
Yes, to release on Solomun´s label was a honor and opened many doors for me. It's something I definitely don't take for granted.
What's the best thing about being a part of such a vast and eclectic crew of DJs and producers? Do you all learn from one another?
Doing what you love in your life is a gift. So I've decided to stay on as long as possible at Diynamic!
Who's your best mate in Diynamic then? How do you bounce off one another musically?
Solomun, Betoko and Karmon are really nice and I respect their music very much. I don't try to copy them though; I feel music like a passion - not like a competition
Will you spending the summer in Ibiza again this summer? How much did you learn last year from doing so?
I really love the island. I'm going there all August and will be playing some parties, but I can't say much more than that yet.
What was the last record you bought by the way? And why?
Felix Rennefeld / Rebel on Funkhaus Music, because I played it on vinyl many times. I needed another copy, cause I fucked up my first copy!
And your latest remix is of Moya's ''Making Me Fall'' on Hedonism Music. Can you talk me through the remix process? How did it all come about anyway?
With the amazing Moya vocal everything came really fast. I did the remix and the dub at the same time, it was really inspiring to me.
What's your relationship like with Hedonism? I gather it's a label with an ethos similar to your own?
Yes, i met Michael from Hedonism a while ago at one of my gigs and since then we've got on really well. He asked me if I want to remix Ben Pearce and it was a big challenge to make something stronger than the original, and last but not least I was doing Moya for them already.
What are your other interests aside from electronic music?
Just simple things, really. Staying in with my wife, having good dinner with friends and snow holidays of course!
What's next in the Kolombo story?
Well there'll be a collaboration with Miguel Campbell soon, and then there'll be a compilation with my partner, Loulou Players on our label, Loulou Records. I also have a few remixes in the pipeline – and I definitely need to start focusing on my own releases too.
