Resin return with their fourth release, this time from their founder Pris. Although only a young label, they are proving to be a no-nonsense imprint for providing some of the best techno sounds out there. With 'A Shot Across The Bows' highlighting exactly that point, it seems they are here to not only stay, but to give us some of the greatest and serious energy into the scene.
Pris himself is somewhat of a mystery. There are things dotted around the internet about him, however he prefers to stay out of the limelight, letting his music do much of the talking, and boy does it do just that. He states in one of his rare interviews that he 'enjoys the bizarre & quirky, as well as intensity & passion in music.' and it is clear that this isn't someone who is just trying to big himself up for the article. His music is very well produced and uses all kinds of subtle effects from thought out panned delays to arpeggiated drum & percussion scopes.
The release itself comprises of 4 tracks of what can only be described as techno gold. Kicking off with the greatly titled 'If She Bends, She Breaks', the track truly explores delayed panning on it's hats and symbols in such a great way, carrying along a drive that encompasses your mind along with it. I cannot wait to hear this on a big system and am surprised I haven't yet heard it in the likes of fabric.
'Elmos Fire' is next in line on the EP and although it is a little more basic than it's predecessor, it carries along the same groove and feel, alowing it to fit perfectly in the release. A strong drive again, it's clear of the skill behind the artist as a whole. No messing in some ways, straight to the point even, yet cushioning the blow of it's fierce sound with an element of subtle genius throughout.
Playing a little on the title of the opening track, 'If She Cracks, She Bears' kicks off with a low-volume drum space, using the pattern to almost to create the atmoshphere to be used throughout the track. Using an electronic-type tin sound as it's initial lead, the track is progressed piece-by-piece into a medley of force and glory. Effected-up percussion is used to create patterns and variation throughout, finishing the track off perfectly. The end result is a simple, yet a great accompaniment to the release.
