Even if you're not the type who likes house to be full of imagination & subtle flair, Laura Jones' latest piano-led opus on Leftroom is still worthy of further investigation.
Title track 'Embrace' - a stomping yet lightly dusted affair that reels off peak time rolling rhythm - sees Jones mixing her upfront tech-clout with melodic wistfulness, injecting soul, emotion and depth without falling foul of the VST plug-in bass quagmire that tarnishes much of the genre.
Taking things in more hypnotic directions is the game-playing, mind-warping Think Over, drenched in acid stabs, 808 hits and recorded signal noises; vocal samples of 'anticipating' add to the paranoia inducing, introspective feel of the track.
Imagination Unreal notches up the chords into a more Major tonal mindset - uplifting and soft, gooey synth lines break down into a hands in the air, perfectly earthed uplifting thumper (modulated and stripped back into Paul Du Lac's Rhythm Dub later down the line.
The already club-endorsed Bright Lights evokes memories of travelling, soaking up the sights and sounds as hollowed out percussion stabs drive a bass-heavy banger with plenty of swing. Effects and widening synths rush past, in and out of earshot, evoking passing lights and the sounds of the city subtly heard on a winding journey. Cassy pushes the button on her lead-heavy techno remix, extracting the industrial, mechanized sounds gathered from the journey and creating a more un-apologetically functional, realistically painted vision of the city
Laura is known for biding her time, gradually releasing her well versed productions into the wild at her own pace. With Embrace, she's certainly demonstrated her complexity as a producer and her nous for musically-charged, unique slices of genre-hopping dance floor fare. Another triumphant move for Leeds' undisputed queen of the scene.
