Whilst one half of YouANDme was off forming the impressive YouAND:THEMACHINES solo project, the other half - funk loving producer and Panoramabar DJ Larsson - has struck gold with his latest EP Close to The River, proving that less is certainly more with a funked out slice of sublime dub techno as he gradually shifts from his previous house leaning outputs.
Stripping back the vocals, over-processed timbres and OTT production work for some seriously weighted and spacious groove, Close to The River snaps into life with the progressive and slow burning Intensions, packed with stomping groove and musical notes wrapped in all enveloping bass, before extra snare rhythms and echoing, emotional lead key stabs fill in the gaps after the drop.
Title track Close to The River sticks to the formula, bringing in subtle nuances over the duration of it's metronomic, yet bubbly tinkling chime melodies and pulsating, gnashing bass.
It's all about jacking to the groove on the flip with Todo Del Noche, splicing Rhodes-esque melodic lines and high-pressured snares - it makes for a track that's juxtaposed between charging pace and ethereal atmosphere; perfect for a 3am spell of hypnosis as aggressively EQ'd, Inner City style bass chords twist and turn.
Rounding off the EP, Larsson unleashes the dub once more on Under The Blue for a more subdued dub-techno closer. An impressive EP for the Bremen-born producer and one that perhaps heralds a shift in tone and pace.
