Sampling. Like it or loathe it, there's little doubting the fact that it plays a pretty important role in the make up of contemporary house music. That said, the invention of the Internet has meant that finding obscure and interesting samples is that much more difficult, meaning that when they do come around, we tend to stand up and take notice.
Such is the case for British producer Hodgson, who marks his first outing on German label, Jeudi, with a two-tracker that's hard to ignore. 'Babylon System' is a house EP in all but name, but the highlights undoubtedly revolve around the producer's chosen vocals.
Pairing them with some catchy beats, therefore, was something of a masterstroke, and both tracks here boast rich crossover potential. Of the two, it's the original which impresses the most, with its unrelenting (and hardly sparsely manipulated) vocal the pick of the litter.
That said, 'One Spliff' is no less shabby, and again the mechanics here revolve around the vocal spine, an elongated bassline and a smidgen of The Prodigy mannerisms.
It might not be the most ornate or discerning EP you'll encounter this summer, but for pure, unadulterated good times, there are few other tracks you'd rather here in a festival domain especially.
