Flying Circus Opening Party @ Sankey Ibiza - Review

Flying Circus Opening Party 11th July 2014 @ Sankey Ibiza - Party Review
Sankeys 2014 season is well and truly up and running now, with every night of the week offering something different from a long lists of international stars. Tonight we decided to head down and check out Flying Circus, the night run by tech house pair AudioFly and one that returns for a second time this year.

The night is perfect for Sankeys, with its underground bookings and raw rave vibes. Taking place in the basement of the club, the sound system is spot on, there are screens displaying Flying Circus logos and more visuals besides and even early on the dancefloor is already pretty busy.

The crowd is a mix of everyone, from locals and workers to fresh-eyed newbies via wizened old veterans. Making them dance already is Daniel Bortz, who is dropping seductively simple house beats with rich basslines and the odd vocal. As the night goes on less and less lights are in action, so when the music gets darker so does the club, intensifying the atmosphere and making for a really special and intimate vibe that is all too rare on the white isle.

After Bortz it’s the inimitable party bosses themselves who take over. Citing the music policy as a balanced mix of underground music for both girls and boys i.e. “not too much techno, nothing too light and a balance of risk and surprise” the Flying Circus parties have also taken place at other hotspots around the world including Croatia, the Netherlands and Barcelona, as well as newer party paradises such as Ukraine and Romania. But Sankeys Ibiza is the night’s real home now, it would seem. Their set is a fun mix of serious grooves, more classic offerings and the sort of tracks they themselves excel at making on labels like Get Physical. The crowd lap it up, whooping at the right moments and cheering the more recognisable hits.

Following them comes headliner and German techno and minimal star Robag Whrume. He does what he does best: goes deep into his collection and threads together the sort of mystifying set that has made him so celebrated by those who know. To date he has released quality EPs and LPs on labels like Kompakt, Pampa and Circus Company and tonight he plays a diverse array of sounds from danceable beats to more quirky interludes and it makes for a fine finish to what is a very special evening.

The weeks ahead look likely to be just as essential for anyone heading to Ibiza this summer. The big hitting likes of Thugfucker, Audiofly, DJ Tennis, Bill Patrick, Martin Buttrich and many more are all set to play the place between now and the end of the season, so make sure you get your ‘Fly on before it’s too late.
