It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Itchy Pig Records, but they return with a bang with this fantastic release from Black Alley, ‘Always Something’, backed up with a trio of delightful remixes from Club Squis, James Johnston and Beard Shaper.
The original starts with a whirlpool of synths that draw you into the track. They’re soon joined by a big, fat kick drum and a bass line so meaty it would make a T-Rex think twice. Simple yet effective percussion keeps things moving forward as the synths cascade through the track like rays of sunlight tumbling through a dusty window at the end of the day.
The Club Squis remix gives the bass some extra bounce and the percussion a little more snap and crackle. The organ riff is allowed the freedom to sashay its way around the track, whilst the additions of an ethereal female vocal and wistful trumpet ratchet up the soulful elements whist investing a hint of jazz into the mix for good measure.
Building from a more percussive base, James Johnston draws out the synth sounds in his remix, instilling them with a greater sense of longing. The vocal features more prominently, the bass line revels with a bit more vim and vigour, whilst the organ refrain drifts along deep in the mix like a leaf being gently swept downstream.
Beard Shaper’s remix sees the clamouring percussive elements collide delightfully atop a fierce kick. The organ riff is brought to the fore, whilst the bass line unleashes itself like a pregnant rain cloud. Swirls of analogue swoop exploratively around the track like an eagle hunting its prey, leaving stabs of synth and piano to trade blows as they vie for your attention.
