The first release on Club No No from Bergen’s Snorre Magnar Solberg puts him firmly in the Sex Tags camp, both through sound and vision. And the record itself, with its off-kilter graphics and two sides of extensive grooves seems to exist in a temporary autonomous zone in which giving a toss is not a priority.
This is an uncompromising release, with ‘Track 1’ treading a fine line in ambient polyphonic white noise.
‘Track 2’, on the other hand, feels more structured, a kick keeping time around which a harmonious wind rushes, barely suppressing the scattered rhythmic antics of an analogue heart.
‘Track 2’ does have more about it, and evolves into something potentially quite beautiful. While ‘Track 1’ could be the soundtrack to a dystopian industrial age gone mad to the tune of primitive techno overtones.
What unites them both though, is a delicate ambiguity which means that it’s not immediately apparent at which speed they play. Depending on the prevalent mood either would do, but I’d challenge anyone to listen to ‘Track 1’ in its entirety slowed down.
It’s easy to imagine this music being made in Norway. There’s a bleakness about it as well as a stark beauty, the textures and tones which are brought together conjuring up images of darkness and isolation, as well as illumination and contact.
