Tribal Sessions is a party that’s led a long and checkered existence in clubland - so it’s surprising really that it’s taken so long for it to arrive on Ibiza. That it finally has is most definitely a good thing - especially when one takes stock of the line-ups, with everyone from Move D to even Francois K checking in down 'Bossa way. Simply put, it's the sort of line-up you basically can't ignore. And the fact that they literally whet our appetite for it last week with a Barbie served up by resident Darius Syrossian only made us even more excited. And we’re glad to report that the burgers were just as delicious as the tunes too.
Starting in the early evening, the opening season revelers were more definitely up for a good time, as a keen mixture of punters and industry bods made their way up to Sankeys rooftop terrace for the inaugural BBQ. DJs and punters mingled with ease, showcasing the family side of what Sankeys is all about. David Vincent and Syrossian seemed to be enjoying it especially, and the lighthearted vibes were a joy to behold.
But now, on to the music. Our first glimpse into what Tribal was all about came about through Recondite, the techno titan who’s on a bit of a roll right now. His set beamed brightest of all I saw, as he brought us on a journey laden with acid hues and pulverizing, dark textures. To summarise, it was exactly in keeping with the room’s mystical (and almost anti-Ibiza) interior. And that’s no bad thing as you can imagine.
Over in the so-called Lab, Israeli DJ/producer Shlomi Aber reminded us why he’s been top of his game for so long now, before Darius himself almost brought the room to a standstill with his set. Easily the most anticipated of the night, his departing of ways with the VIVa Warriors crew is already one which seems to have served him well. Sidney Charles continued in a similar vein, keeping the energy tight throughout, before NYC legend – and a Tribal legend for that matter – Danny Tenaglia, closed out in quite emphatic fashion.
Are we tribal? On this basis, we most definitely are…
