Johnny Mikes feat. Michael B - Life Games EP on Lower East

With past releases from the likes of Alexis Raphael, Climbers, Kris Wadsworth, Lee Foss, MK, Richy Ahmed, Timo Maas (the list goes on), there is no doubt that this label not only holds a lot of weight in the industry, but it is clear it is a well respected one at that. Why? Because their output is consistent for sure. However it's something more than that. The label puts out some of the best house music around today. It's hard to come across a dancefloor that isn't playing something from the label. So its always good to hear they have new stuff forthcoming.

Although having released music on the label before, Johnny Mikes is relatively new to the scene. Hailing from London, the young stalwart has only ever released on Lower East and it's clear that the guys behind the label see a lot of potential in him - this release is damn good proof of that. Although I still believe he is still finding where his sound lies as an artist, that doesn't mean to say his music is lacking in any way. 'Sound Machine Express' has some strong notes and a great drum arrangements throughout for sure, not too mention great spacing across the frequencies. However it is not ground-breaking. An OK sound for any floor.

However, 'Life Games' for me is a whole lot stronger. More to the point, it hits the nail completely of the skill that lies within this artist. The track is complete and wholesome in its final sound, with all the elements fitting perfectly - from the Moog baselines, 808 drum formations (that have been EQd and filtered perfectly), to luscious Juno pads that glide you perfectly along its path. As for the vocals, they are excellent. Not only does the voice fit unabridged with the track, it's great to hear someone who knows how to write lyrics properly. A superb track.

Gavin Herlihy has been drafted in to give his interpretation of 'Life Games' to the release. Since he began his career, he has since seen his music on a very respectful line of labels from Cocoon, Get Physical, Apparel and Buzzin Fly, amongst various others. Why? Because he delivers. It's as simple as that. His remix on this release is no different. Weighty for sure and created to make you move, this track definitely delivers. The panning throughout is delicious and the drive of the whole track is energetic. A great addition for sure.

I would have to say that the EP is a tale of two different coins. 'Sound Machine Express' doesn't really fit this spectrum. It is, if I'm honest, a little weak. However 'Life Games' is in a totally different league. It is, and I don't say this very often, amazing. The track in which the vocals sit in is brilliant. As for the lyrics themselves, sensational. A must for anyone’s collection.
