DJ Haus’s Unknown To The Unknown imprint is as accurate an example as any of a label which is currently surfing the zeitgeist of electronic, floor-based eclecticism. It’s good because it simultaneously feels random and correct while continuing along its unerring schedule.
Chaos In The CBD come hot on the heels of Willie Burns, and are native New Zealanders now residing in London, and their titular original is here worked into a new sonic mutation, courtesy of the ubiquitous Legowelt, alongside ‘Okinawa Race 1’.
In its original form ‘Delorean Dreams’ is a marching tool of a track, lifted slightly out of the ordinary by a repetitive vocal sample which robotically intones “Everybody’s getting hyper now” over a tireless backbeat and, from the second minute in, an amoebic synth which gradually becomes the tracks most arresting motif. This aptly paves the way for Legowelt’s interpretation, which is a typically cosmic piece of analogue ectoplasm. The layers of sound cling to each other like parasitic mud, the details of which, when dissected, reveal a cross-section of hauntological rhythm.
‘Okinawa Race 1’ isn’t that dissimilar from the other original on this release, but is cleaner-sounding, relying a little more on its percussion than synth, as well as managing to squeeze in a little bit more syncopation.
Legowelt is a good fit for the spontaneity inherent in this label’s philosophy, being one of the most adaptable electronic space cadets on the planet. He has appeared on UTTU before and his is the standout moment on this release. The two originals more than play their part though, lending an air of sophisticated functionality as they do.
