Chaim - Blue Shadow EP on Rumors

Chaim is a producer who continues to deliver the goods with some assurance after all this time. His is an ethos which never panders to novelty values or generic forms, and indeed, it continues to entice us with a palette that's as beguiling as it is diverse. For his latest outing, he crops up on compatriot Guy Gerber's fledgling Rumors imprint, with the majestic Blue Shadow proving a real break from the norm.

Leading us down a merry road is the work of the title-number, an elegant track which is notable for its hot, stuffy and humid vibes. From the get-go, it makes an impression thanks to its strident ambiance, but it's the unfurling synth-lines that really tug at our emotions. Like much of Gerber's own forte, it wonderfully joins the dots between dancefloor and introspective poise. Not many producers can pull off such feats while still staying underground – but Chaim is far from your average producer.

The first of the remixes comes from Manfredi Romano AKA DJ Tennis. The Life and Death boss is another man who knows a thing or two about delivering up such carefully crafted bombs, and it's no bad thing that he offers up a remix that's similar in structure to what he's most renowned for.

Gerber then takes control of the B-side, as he uses a host of white noise and some synth-washed, twinkle-toed and celestial melodies in quite emphatic fashion. An EP for the ages, this one has 'future classic' marked all over it.
