Ben Sun - Fall Upon You EP on Love Fever Records

Love Fever Records continue to further their reputation as a go to haven for sensual soulful house with this release from Voyeurhythm's Ben Sun and Fantastic Man Mic Newman. Following on from releases by Kim Ann Foxman and Bicep, the mood is unsurprisingly retro, yet does not find itself wandering down a tired 808 groove like many peers in this current climate. Rolling with a Juno lead adds a feather light touch, which is earthened by rocking out the MPC60 at the all important rhythmic core. As a result the mood is more Guidance - such as the works of Callisto and Larry Heard - than the frequently plundered vaults of Trax and Strictly Rhythm.

Both Fall From You and Shadow Dance feel as if they are twin siblings, each sharing the same modulated male vocal and dewy atmosphere. Of course any good parent can tell the differences between beloved offspring and delving deeper starts to reveal individual identity between the pair.

Fall From You carries itself with a dreamlike grace, the clap snapping and jazzy ride work providing a suitable engine for the twirling synth work that deftly dances over gently swelling pads.

Revealing a more rambunctious side, within the constraints of deep house of course, Shadow Dance's conga and spitting hihats are an obvious ramp in physicality, which is repaid in kind by synths that display more purpose than those of its nearest and dearest.

Neither vies for attention or creates a fuss but both are classically appealing for deep minded individuals. In particular, for those who are tired of tracks being farted out by the Microsoft Deep House Track Paperclip Assistant, whose presence in Ableton, with a "how can I generate a derivative beat for you today?" quip, needs scrubbing from existence at the earliest opportunity.
