There’s plenty of spotlight at the moment on Parisian house head Anthony Collins and the Scissor & Thread label he runs alongside Francis Harris ; with the latter generating plenty of buzz with his new artist album Minutes of Sleep.
Collins has also been running the Natural History sublabel alongside Scissor & Thread since 2012, as a means of showcasing the more analogue sounds on a deeper tip. By its nature the releases are more lowkey, and conventional club tools in a sense; though this isn’t to play down the charm of the latest Exhibit ‘F’ release.
The A-side Panther Lies is a winner in particular, a sublime slice of house that that basks in its chilled vibes. A soft, shimmering synth melody sets the tone in the intro, with the tune’s deep bassline further locking things down. A few vocal snippets compliment the strength of the groove, though it’s the sublime piano that bursts into the frame unexpectedly halfway through that delivers the emotion. Simple and sublime, and full of gentle charm.
Union Block is a deeper, more restrained number, with a rougher groove that’ll make it an effective tool in the peaktime; though there’s still melodic appeal via the sharp turn the tune makes in the breakdown, halfway into its 8 minute running time.
With both tunes here, there’s a certain unmistakable confidence to Collins’ work in the studio, and “simple but very effective” is the mantra that captures the appeal of the Natural History series.
